Smart locks have been growing in popularity for years, and for good reason - the convenience of unlocking your door from your phone, granting temporary access to a dog walker, or checking whether you locked up after leaving is genuinely useful. But 'smart' doesn't automatically mean 'more secure,' and Phoenix's climate adds a few wrinkles worth considering.
Traditional deadbolts - a Grade 1 ANSI-certified deadbolt with a 1-inch throw and reinforced strike plate - remain the gold standard for physical security. They have no software vulnerabilities, no batteries to die, and no Wi-Fi connection to hack. For a second deadbolt or a door that isn't frequently accessed, a quality traditional lock is hard to beat on pure security merit.
Smart locks trade some of that simplicity for convenience and features. The best ones (Schlage Encode, Yale Assure, August Smart Lock Pro) still use Grade 1 or Grade 2 rated cylinders, so the physical lock quality is comparable to a good traditional deadbolt. What you're adding is a keypad, app connectivity, and the ability to audit who came and went.
Phoenix-specific consideration: heat. Temperatures above 105°F can reduce battery life significantly, and direct sun on a south- or west-facing door can put a smart lock in conditions it wasn't designed for. Look for smart locks rated for high-temperature environments, and keep a backup key somewhere accessible. We've had calls from homeowners whose smart lock battery died mid-summer and couldn't get in.
Our recommendation at KeyMaster: install a smart lock on your primary entry point if convenience matters to you, but pair it with a high-quality deadbolt on any secondary door. Don't skip the reinforced strike plate - most residential door frames can be kicked in regardless of how good the lock is, and a $30 strike plate upgrade changes that calculation entirely.
